South Manitou Island Light One of the most memorable lighthouses on the Great Lakes, the South Manitou Island Light is accessible to visitors to the island through tours by the park service. The light is just a short walk from the Lifesaving Station where you arrive to the island. The station was established in 1839 and the current structure was built in 1872. The tower rises 104 feet above the water and a trip to the top provides an amazing view of the Manitou Passage. SOUTH MANITOU ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE - CIRCA 1884
