On both North and South Manitou Islands, low-impact camping is the rule. South Manitou has three campgrounds: Weather Station, Bay and Popple. On North Manitou, the "free camping" policy allows you to choose your site (not camp for free). Camping fees are assessed by the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Be warned: there is no transportation to and from your camp, so pack accordingly. Potable water is available on both islands. We recommend that you bring hard containers or hang your food from a line to thwart the voracious "timber tigers" (aka chipmunks). |  |
